During my internship at Carl & Carl design studio in Copenhagen, I was asked to design a new oil lamp for the traditional Swedish brand Skeppshult, which products are used for practical and decorative purposes in households, restaurants, leisure facilities and similar fields.
The key design requirement was safety, especially regarding children, to prevent the accidental leakage or poisoning.
The Childproof Lamp concept consists of a resistant oil container made of cast iron. The filler cap can not be opened by one movement, but of two independent movements. It was designed specifically to comply with the required EU safety standard. This standard for oil lamps aims primarily to restrict the access of small children to the lamp oil contained in the lamps, but also covers some other safety aspects.
